Calculate optimal zoom level without administrative boundaries

mtmail

Marc Tobias Metten, Lokku Ltd. DE

Details about the talk:
At Nestoria we face a problem most websites with a
map have: what is the optimal zoom level to show to
a user after a search?
Based on data we see that how big a city really is
(administrative boundaries) has little to do with
presenting results that are local (shopping, travel,
property, POIs), especially on small maps.

We experimented with different location data, manual
classification, formulas, past user behaviour and
population density.

Nestoria operates in 5 European countries plus India,
Australia and Brazil. We use Google Maps for presentation
but maintain our own geographic database for finding
places.

Details about the speaker:
Lead software developer at Lokku London. Worked previously at Amazon when it opened in Europe and at Yahoo! United States to build the next generation data warehouse for Yahoo! Search globally.
Mapped one German city (100km2) for OSM.
