Projected Hill Map
Gregory Marler, The University of Durham ![]()
Details about the talk:
"To investigate if geographic understanding of an area is easier to gain and share through use of a system that combines a physical terrain model and a computer-controlled map display, in comparison to traditional flat maps."
In essence it's not virtual, it's not physical. It's a physical model of white hills on which an (OSM) map is projected to give controllable geographic features. The paper will be finished in April and submitted as part of my degree of "BSc Computer Science (International Studies)" at The University of Durham.
Details about the speaker:
Having been previously aware of the project, Gregory became an OpenStreetMapper in Spring 2007. After the summer things kicked off when he moved to Durham, to start university in a new city and pledged to use no maps unless the copyright was as free as OSM. As that only consisted of the main river and motorway, it was the map he created as he explored his new environment. Progress and difficulties were blogged at LivingWithDragons.com. After 3 years of putting Durham on the map, Gregory's 4th year project was bound to involve maps in some way and thankfully a wealth of data now existed for him to use.
