Since 2008 the Verkehrsverbund Rhein-Sieg (VRS) followed a close cooperation with local OSM-communities in southern North Rhine-Westphalia. In this context the data release of the information on bus stops and line positions due to OSM took place in 2009, which since then are available for download on the OSM wiki page of the VRS. The previously mentioned OSM wiki page also serves as central website for information or documentation of all OSM-activities. In addition to an intensive exchange between the local OSM-community and the OSM contact person at the VRS, a joint workshop on public transport tagging was performed in December 2010. Here, the current status in the OSM tagging of public transport as well as the improvements for the further development of the public transport tagging scheme were discussed.
In the first half of 2011 the VRS implemented a new information system for stops on its website, in which the source map of OSM is used. Thus, different transprovincial map visualizations drop out. Internally the VRS uses amongst others the comparison of stop positions from OSM with its own information to improve its data quality. There is a win-win situation in the cooperation for the OSM community as well as for the VRS. More projects are planned for the future. At present the financial support for the development of a public transport editor in JOSM and the tagging of information about accessibility at bus stops are taken into consideration.
The VRS would also like to serve as a positive example for other transport associations and transport operators to see the manifold possibilities of using OSM maps and the cooperation with local OSM-communities as an opportunity for itself and its customers.
Deutsch:
